A versatile singer and performing artiste, Sharmistha Chatterjee is renowned for her mastery over different musical styles. Her inimitable vocals in the viral hit “Tilasmi Bahein”, from Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s magnum opus, “Heeramandi” (May, 2024) on Netflix, have been topping the charts on streaming platforms and drawing critical applause.

Her SHARMISTHA CHATTERJEE LIVE shows present her unique musical aesthetics — mixing Hindustani Classical singing traditions with Indian folk and jazz; encompassing Sufi music and Panjabi poetry as well as commercial Hindi film songs — in an exhilarating performance with her band of musicians.

A trained Hindustani vocalist, she has worked in the Indian film industry for two decades, lending her voice to playback singing, ad jingles, background scores as well as indie productions. She has also featured in and collaborated with some of the most sought-after artistes in the world of jazz and fusion. Her collaboration with composer Amit Trivedi on the song “Baithi Hai” from his album “Songs of Trance” ( September 2020) was hugely popular

Between 2013 -2017, Sharmistha was the voice of the famous South Asian progressive rock band, Mekaal Hasan Band, originally based out of Lahore. She is the first and only Indian woman to be the lead vocalist of a premier Pakistani band. She is the first Indian singer to feature in Coke Studio Pakistan, performing with Mekaal Hasan Band in the show’s Season 8. The band’s hugely popular numbers “Sayon” and “Kinaray” and her performance won many hearts across borders and throughout the world. Mekaal Hasan Band’s third album, “Andholan” features Sharmistha on all the eight tracks. The song “Ghunghat”, a Baba Bulle Shah kalaam, topped charts in Pakistan and was voted the top song of 2015 according to an Express Tribune poll. Following their Coke Studio success, the band toured widely across North America, performing at festivals and prestigious venues across Canada and USA in 2015 and 2016, including South Asian Mosaic Festival, Surrey Fusion Festival, Hill Side Festival Guelph, Joe’s Pub, New York, and Berklee College of Music, Boston, and in cities like Toronto, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Denver and many more.

Sharmistha is also the lead vocalist in Grammy-nominated pianist Louiz Bank’s Indo-Jazz fusion group Ganga Shakti. The group has performed across India. She has also been on lead vocals with India’s greatest drummer, Ranjit Barot’s world/jazz/fusion band called Ranjit Barot & The Resistance. As a live performer for both Bollywood and indie concerts, she has performed extensively in India and abroad. She also collaborated and performed with the band Orange Street in one of India’s most popular musical shows on television, Coke Studio at MTV.
